Resumen

Left ventricular hypertrophy (L VH) of the concentric type is the cardiac adaptation to the pressure overload of hypertenslon. However, patients wlth LVH, have a higher risk of cardiovascular morbidity and death than those with normal hearts. To determine the impact of systemic hypertcnsion on lert ventricular mass, systolic and diastolic function, forty patlents were evaluated. Twenty hypertenslve patients with electrocardiographic LVH were compared wlth twenty normal control subjects. The echocardiographic evaluation of CARDIACSTRUCTURE (left ventricular wall thickeness, left ventricular internal dimensions and left ventricular mass index); ejection fhase indexes of SYSTOLIC performance (left ventricular fractional shortening and ejection fraction); and doppler measures of DIASTOLIC function (peak velocity of early and late left ventricular filling, ratio of late to early filling and isovolumic relaxation period), were demostrated significantly altered in hypertensive patients. The myocardial abnormalities associated with high blood pressure are potentlally reversible risk factors and may help to stratify the need for lntensive treatment.
