Abstract

During the end of the 18th century and first decades of the 19th century, the Peruvian medical doctors were involved with the libertarian ideas. This involvement supposed an important shifting away from the new medical scientific tendencies that were developing in Europe under the Age of Enlightenment. In 1821, because of the active participation of the medical doctors in the fighting for the independence of the country, the old royal San Fernando school of medicine was renamed as Colegio de la Independencia.
