Abstract

Objective: To study maternal mortality tendency atone National Hospital of the ex-Social Security Peruvian lnstitute (now EsSALUD). Design: Epidemiological descriptive retrospective study of maternal deaths registered at our Hospital. Subjects., Two hundred and eleven women that died during pregnancy, delivery or postpartum. Location: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital, ex-SSP Results. Direct obstetrical deaths represented 71,5% (153 cases), including 25,1% (53 cases) of pregnancy induced hypertension, 24,2% (51 cases) of infections, 15,6% (33 cases) of hemorrhage and 7,6% (16 cases) of other direct obstetrical causes. lndirect obstetrical causes represented 27,8% (57 cases) and non-related causes 0,5% (1 case). Maternal mortality rate was 40,8/100000 lnb, rate unchanged for the past 1 0years. Conclusions: Reasons for not decreasing maternal mortality at our Hospital are discussed and emphasis is placed on measures that may contribute to decrease maternal deaths, including obstetrical attention of quality and warmth, better reference and counter reference and update of the obstetrical equipment.
